About Us
Your Pets Butcher was started in July 2009, but our story starts in 2003 and is the brainchild of our own experiences in obtaining meat and raw bones for our companion animals.
Prior to this, for as long as we have shared our lives with dogs we were occasionally giving our dogs marrow bones as a treat and diversion from their bland kibble diet. With the addition of a bitch who is third-generation raw fed, with my wife’s support I decided we should continue feeding raw as well as start feeding the rest of our pack BARF… depending on where you read it this acronym stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food or more simply Bones and Raw Food.
Truth be told we WERE seeing measurable improvement in our dog’s health and appearance, but the deeper we got into researching how to optimally feed our beloved companions BARF, we couldn’t help but see that as with humans ‘variety is the spice of life’. We also started a breeding program and wanted to ensure that these puppies were getting the best possible start to life by providing varied and plentiful sources of protein.
Feeding an animal isn’t as easy as it used to be. Up until the late 1800’s- when processed dog food was popularized- dogs basically ate from the same food source their owners did. Farmers naturally fed their dogs scraps from what was grown or slaughtered. Depending on where they worked, herding dogs ate meat and parts from mutton, goat, etc. Inuit and northern breeds were fed from fish and blubber. Dogs used in hunting consumed what was not used by the hunter. Dogs everywhere gratefully dined on meat scraps, bones and offal that was both convenient and available to their owners.
In a world of more options than ever before- super premium and grain free kibble, mixtures in tubes or patties of ground meat, bones and vegetables, dehydrated diets, and all manner of canned or frozen meat and “homemade” concoctions- giving your Carnivore whole bones, muscle and organ meat is frankly liberating! We all know that meat in its uncooked, unprocessed state loses none of its weight or nutritive value. Another huge benefit which the others can’t offer is that you know precisely what they are consuming, exactly what is going into their tummies. You are in complete control of the ingredients and the quality of food your cherished companion eats, reassuring in an age where there seem to be pet food recalls every few years…
It is the stated mission of Your Pets Butcher to offer a means for dog- and other companion animal- guardians to obtain top quality meat and raw bones, as economically and painlessly as possible. We have set out to develop a diverse selection of products which can be pre-ordered through this website for regular pick up. We accept cash, checks, credit and debit cards as payment, and are able to keep prices down by not passing along the expenses inherent in a brick and mortar establishment.
